Khan Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

Islamabad, August 5: A court in the Pakistani capital on Saturday found Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of the country, guilty on charges of concealing sale proceeds of state gifts received by him during his stint as Prime Minister.

Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison.

In May this year, too, Khan was arrested before being released almost immediately in a couple of days.

Former Pakistani Test captain Imran Khan served as the country’s Prime Minister between 2018 and 2022.

According to Pakistani media, the 70-year-old had been sentenced by a Pakistan trial court for not declaring the proceeds of state gifts to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

His political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed an appeal with the country’s Supreme Court.

In previous instances, any attempts to arrest Khan from his residence Zaman Park were met with stiff resistance from his followers.

Subsequently, he was arrested on May 9, prompting widespread protests across Pakistan, leading to a severe crackdown against his party and a bill to try his supporters in military courts, a move that violates international law.
